I encourage you to attend at least one Witness Tree ceremony. Attendance at several of them would be also encouraged. The ceremony takes place at noon each day November 1 through Veterans’ Day, November 11, and lasts about 10 minutes. The ceremony is held at a tree just outside my office at Village Hall. During the ceremony you are encouraged to hang a dog tag on the Witness Tree, either a blank tag, or one on which you have written the name of a veteran you may want to be remembered. The main purpose of the Witness Tree is recognize those veterans who have tragically taken their own lives; they are, it can be argued, casualties of war. But it is also for all veterans, those who have served or are currently serving, those still with us and those who have passed. We owe them all; please, spare ten minutes of your day to honor them.
